CHILD FIND FOR THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF NEWBERRY COUNTY
Child Find is a component of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) that requires states to identify, locate, and evaluate children with disabilities, regardless of their disabilities, who may need special education services.
The School District of Newberry County has procedures in place to assist families and community entities in providing a continuous process of screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and evaluate children residing in the county with disabilities who may need special education and related services. This includes children ages 3 to 21 who attend public or private schools; those who are homeschooled; and those who are homeless or wards of the state.

Who should I call for an appointment?
The School District of Newberry County conducts Child Find Screenings monthly throughout the school year.
To schedule an appointment to have your child screened, contact the Office of Special Services at 803-321-2611
What should I bring to the appointment?
Any paperwork mailed to you by the school district
Outside agency reports or therapy notes that you may have regarding your child
Where are Child Find appointments conducted?
Appointments for preschool-age children and school-aged children are typically conducted at the District
Office Annex, 1539 Martin Street, Newberry, SC
How long is a Child Find appointment?
Initial appointments last approximately 1 hour.
Some children will be referred for a follow-up appointment if needed. These appointments will range from 45 minutes to 2 hours.
What happens after my initial Child Find appointment?
A team of Child Find evaluators will provide you with the next steps following your appointment based on your child's individual needs.
Possible next steps could include recommendations or a follow-up Child Find appointment for further evaluation.
